Sanding stairs

Take a paint scraper & drag at the glue. Does it powder, or gaum up? If it powders, it's latex & you can sand it without clogging paper too bad. If gaums up, it's solvent based & you'll need to get an adhesive remover to remove it. Be sure to ventilate the area really well if you have to go that route.

pinwheel45 covered everything about the glue part. i'd like to ask about the raisers though... are you planning on sanding those too? or paint them? also what type of wood are you dealing with?
