can i use a hand sander to sand my hard wood floors to paint them

I suppose you can. It will be a lot of work and hard to get them smooth.

I've done it with a 4" belt sander---very slow and very expensive --at $4.00 a belt---but it can be done.

Start with 36 grit and work up to 100 or 120 grit---random orbit for the edges----scraper for the corners.

sanding a hard wood floor


Rent an orbital, not a drum, floor sander. They use a fair amount of paper but they are fairly easy to use and it is pretty hard to screw things up like you can with a drum sander. You just keep switching to finer grid papers until the surface is ready for finish. They also sand most all the way to the edges.

Make sure you set all exposed nails heads first.
