sanding down 3/16" on hardibacker for transitioning 1/2" rock to 3/8" tile


My hardibacker board has been installed for 3 weeks. It is swrewed doun on the thinset (modified). I had after tought of doing a rock inlay. How do I sand down to get my transition level. Do I sand (with what grit), maybe a drum sander. Thanks for you help, Karen
