Rusty subfloor nails

Pulled up 35 year old carpet on main floor of 3 story townhouse. All nails are rusted and subfloor is basically held down by gravity with nails acting as guides.

I know I can screw down the subfloor with galvanized screws but any idea of why the rust? Too much water when cleaning carpets. I thought of pets but the rust and color of the wood is very uniform. No spots or smell.

Maybe for the first 5 years. But then my mother in law bought it. And she was a firm believer in conditioned air.

I’ve seen that around here over ventilated, fiberglass insulated crawl spaces. The solid wood joists are wicking condensation to dry to the inside wetting the fasteners along the way: http://www.buildingscience.com/docum...n-crawlspaces/
Along with what BUD said........

No crawl space. This is on the 1st and 2nd floor. There is a basement and it's all conditioned space.

I'm not seeing rust in what little of the kitchen floor I've pulled up so I'm going with over eager carpet cleaning for now.
