rough sawn lumber for hardwood floors

my wife and I are doing a major remodel on our home, our next step is to install hardwood flooring, we want the old antique look, it just feels more cozy and warming to us. A friend of mine told me I can get this look by buying rough sawn lumber from a local mill and finshing and staining the wood ourselves to suit our personal style.

Can I actually order some rough sawn lumber from a mill and put it down instead of buying it from a store like lowes?

if so what is the process of finishing/staining/installing it?

and what are the best stains/finishes & wood to use?

any information would be helpful
and thanks in advance

rough sawn lumber for hardwood floors

Hi, I see you are in Kentucky---There shoud be a lot of small mills within an easy drive.

Here is a link to a site that has a good list of small cutters in the U.S.Nelsonwoodworks.biz - Home

A little searching under SAWMILLS-KENTUCKY will also help.

As for laying the floors as rough sawn--Boy I don't know how that would work--

The rough sawn lumber varies in thickness--the edges are not straight--the boards are not flat--

Many(not all) mills can plane the boards for you,rip them to size and some will even cut the tongue and groove---

I have purchased many hundreds of board feet of walnut, cherry, oak and hickory from small mills--
The savings are amazing and the quality beats any local supplier.

Good luck! Have fun--MIKE---
