rosin under hardwood
I am going to be installing 3/4 inch solid oak flooring on the second level of a home. There are 2 layers of vinyl tile (12x12 squares) total thickness is 1/8 inch. The subfloor is 2 layers of 3/4 inch plywood on 16 on center joists. Is a rosin underlayment necessary? Do I need to remove one or both layers of tile?

Have to think on this one! I have never installed 3/4 over tile. You say there are two layers of 3/4 plywood down already!!! What kind of tile is on the floor? You don't want to tear it up if there is any chance that it's asbestos. But on the other hand nailing or stapleing may chip it anyway and staples may deflect if it is vinyl asbestos your already driving them on an angle? I always use either rosin or 15# felt depending on location, rosin on second floor. If I was going to do it I would use the rosin paper and use nails instead of staples and leave the tile in place.
