Retile floor that has vinyl underneath

We are looking at retiling our kitchen floor and we found that a layer of vinyl exists under the tile by looking at a floor vent. The house is from 1943 but it looks like they put 3/4 plywood on top of the original planks and a vinyl was put down at some point. Then they used some type of liquid underlayment that is blue before putting the tile on top.

My guess is I have to remove and replace the subfloor but is that correct?

Not sure as I can't figure out what layer is in what order from your post but the vinyl and any 1/4" underlayment under it needs to be removed.

Here is a photo and the only thing the metal flashing is blocking is the original wood planks underneath the plywood

If you are going to put ceramic tiles down you will need cement board like Harding backerboard or wunderboard.

I know that part. I am more curious how many layers of the old floor I need to remove based upon the above photo
