May depend on where you live, as far as weather conditions. But the outdoor carpet is certainly a viable option. It's inexpensive enough that if you had to change it out after about 5 years, no big deal. Plus it would be easy on bare feet and no splinters.
Home Depot carries something called Deck Restore that I've been dying to try out at my parents house. Their deck is decades old and splintering/checking very badly. This stuff like a paint and is supposed to fill up to 1/4" cracks and feels like stone/brick when complete. Really interesting looking stuff, but I havent heard any real life reviews yet.
