Replacing subfloor under a stud?

Most often I use a Toe Kick saw and cut along the bottom plate, leaving the subfloor under the plate. In a pinch you can cut it out along the plate with an ossilating saw or a sawsall with a short wood cutting blade. Why does it all need to come out?
