repairing a rug

Okay, not really a flooring question but thought someone might have experience in the area. It's a beautiful 100% wool rug about 8x10. Thick, heavy and dense pile. Unfortunately, it has a couple of cuts on the backing made by a box cutter or similar. The slits are a few inches long and do not go completely through the backing into the pile. I want to make sure it stays that way and doesn't get worse. So, what would be a good way to repair the cuts or stabilize them? Thanks.
