Removing stones from concrete floor

So im in the process of buying a new house. It is a two story brick home and the 1st floors is actually half way under the ground. They have tile on the entire floor but a portion of it has stones. In the same area they have stones on the wall. My guess is that the stones are there for fire purposes since there is an old wood burning stove. I want to get rid off all of the stones and tile and put hardwood down. How should I go about doing this? Any ideas would be greatfully appreciated. I have remodeled homes in the past but never came to this problem. I have always ripped tile off of duroc.

Thanks,
Dustin

You need to post a picture for a good answer--but I imagine that the stones are set in thinset,on top of the concrete---a hammer and chisel will knock those off.

An electric chipping hammer would be helpful if there are a lot to remove.
