Removing peel and stick tile adhesive in preparation for tile

Hi,

I've got a small bathroom in the basement where the previous owner had installed a less than impressive peel and stick vinyl floor. Now that I think about it, I've never seen an impressive peel and stick floor .

Anyway, the adhesive left behind is minimal, but it's still tacky and in no way ready for a new floor. It would be hard to scrape because there isn't much thickness to it. Should I go the chemical route or hot water/hand scrape? The new floor will be ceramic/porcelain tile over the existing concrete slab.

Any tips would be appreciated.

DO NOT USE SOLVENTS!---Scrape it as clean as you can----hot water might help--Most modified thinsets will bond to the adhesive residue--I would use a two part thinset like Kerabond and Keralastic

Often the solvents soak into the slab--causing a worse bonding problem than the glue would have.

There are a couple of top tile guys here that may offer a clearer explanation--or even tell you that I am wrong!--Let's see what others have to suggest.--Mike--

Sprinkle some floor fill or baby powder on the adhesive, then it will scrape up.
