removing old paint from hardwood floor

help... as I was removing carpet in the living room, I discovered the whole 500 sq ft of wood floor in painted with old latex paint . What is the easiest, quickest and most cost effective way to remove it.
Thanks

The quickest and likely the cheapest would be to call a floor sanding outfit.

If the wood is oak,you could chemically strip it and try sanding it your self---However,it is almost always cheaper to pay a pro---

My concern---Why would someone cover the wood with latex and then cover it with carpet?

That is a trick used to seal in pet odor--the floors may be damaged---Mike---

I agree with oh mike, drum sanding is the only way.....as he said you may find dark stains that are too deep in the wood...people that sell homes with pets will put a primer over the floor to kill the odor...you may start only to find that the stains are too deep to sand out....If you are handy you can rent a drum sander, but it takes practice to run one properly, buy an extra belt and practice starting and stopping the drum sander on a sheet of plywood[make sure you start the machine with the belt off the floor, and lift the belt off before stopping the machine].
