Removing mortor from a concrete floor

Hello, I hope someone can help me. What is the best way to remove old mortor from a concrete floor? I am replacing tiles in the basement and need to clean the surface for a 'smooth finish'.
Thanks,
Kirk.

Removing mortor from a concrete floor

I usually do the following.

I set up my shop vac outside the house. I have a set of hoses that I run together so I can have it sucking dust inside and blowing outside.

Whack the mortar on the slab with a heavy hammer. I'm assuming the tile has been removed. I use a 3 lb small sledge with a short handle so I can work on my knees.

The sledge will powder the mortar without damaging the slab. Keep the hose for the shop vac nearby and use it to suck the powder right out of there.
