Removing Linoleum Adhesive.
In a couple weeks our church men's group is going to be pulling up the old linoleum & laying commercial tile in the kitchen & dining hall of a boys' home. The linoleum is on concrete.
Any ideas about the best way to get all the adhesive off the concrete before laying the new tile?
I don't know the specifics of the adhesive, but this building is about 15 years old (if that gives a hint as to what was typically used back then).
does the existing lino have a paper backing? are the seams welded? ie: are they approx 1/8" wide?
what kind of tile are you putting down? ceramic or vinyl?
the extra detail would help :)
The seams are not welded. There is one seam, and it has split apart due to wear and water. I'm also unable to say exactly what kind of linoleum it is, or exactly what kind of adhesive was used. That's why I mentioned the age of the building - hoping that something was "typical" back then.
We also have time constraints to work with. Just two days.
We will be laying "commercial" tile - the kind you often see at hospitals, etc. Factoring everything in, it seemed to be the best option.
Sorry I can't give better information. I would if I could!
with a 'split seam' it sounds like a felt(paper) backed vinyl. If so the steps would be:
- using a utility knife cut the vinyl in strips of 12-18 inches wide and pull off of floor
- scrape up all the paper using a 4" scraper that fits a blade in the end (WEAR KNEEPADS)
-job goes twice as fast with 2 scrapers and 2 sets of kneepads (not rocket science but with friendly conversation and taking turns the scraping will be a memory quick enough
- if installing ceramic tile you are ready to proceed
- if installing vinyl tile then patch the floor with a cement based floorpatch and polymer additive
- scrape floor, vacuum and proceed with tile
