removing glue from hardwoods

i have recently purchased my first home and found that under the carpet is hardwood flooring. in the foyer a past owner glued parquet flooring on top of the hardwoods. i dont know exactly what type of glue it is or how old it is, but the glue has dryed white and is kind of foamy. is there anyway to get the glue off the hardwood without damaging them? am i going to have to sand it off? any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it is foamy that makes me think it is polyurethane glue. I doubt you'll be able to remove it from your hardwood without re-finishing.

I'd say try laquer thinner, but that will booger the finish of the hardwood beneath. Chances are, the poly glue already did that anyhow.

if laquer does not do the trick is there anything else i could try? is there anthing i should not try? is there any type of chemicals that will damage the floors beyond repair?
