Removing carpet adhesive - is it safe? If so, easiest way?

Hi there,

I'm looking to remove some old carpet in our basement - there's a carpet layer on top, a cushion layer, and then the original carpet. That original carpet appears to have been secured to the concrete floor with an adhesive. See the attached pictures.

The adhesive has a sandy, dusty texture that scrapes away with a blade. I get nervous though, since I'm a DIY-newbie and am not sure if it's possibly an asbestos adhesive.

So my first question - from the looks of it, is it safe to remove myself?
If it is, what's the easiest way to do so? A scraper/sander? A chemical?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Not a fun job but this is how it's done.

Lowes and Home Depot have them in the flooring dept.

What do you plan on installing once it's gone?

I doubt you have to worry about asbestos.

Check with a janitorial supply. They usually have adhesive solvents that will at least loosen the stuff. They get a sharp scraper and have at it. If that doesn't work you will have to sand/grind it off.

As Joe says, not a fun job ahead of you.

Thanks for the replies! I'm going to pick up one of those scrapers tomorrow.

The plan is to lay down some area rugs on the concrete for now. We want to finish the basement down the road, so best to get this out of the way now.

Should not contain asbestos. I would not use a solvent for removal. It can keep whatever you install later from adhering.
