removing carpet adhesive before tiling

A friend (not on DIYCR, yet), has pulled up the carpet from his concrete basement floor. He's planning on recovering with 18x18 ceramic tile. How meticulous does he need to be removing old adhesive? He says it looks like mastic, but isn't really sure what the adhesive is. Will thinset bind to remnants of carpet adhesive?

removing carpet adhesive before tiling

The adhesive should be removed. Rental shops will have a disk with cutting heads that mounts to an orbital floor buffer/polisher. That is the best way to get it off.
