Removed carpet down to hard wood, quarteround needed?

My husband and I just removed our carpet down ot orignial (and beautiful) hardwood lfoors. The floors are in perfect condition, still shiny after being covered probably more than 30 years by previous owners.

The only problem is there is a gap between where we removed the carpet tacks and the baseboards that appears unfinished. I'm assuming quarter round was once in place. I have no problems with putting quarter round back down, but what do you do about the quaterround when it comes to the door frames. The baseboards aren't flush to the door frames, but any quarter round is obviously going to protrude farther than the door frames. Is this acceptable? If so, how do you "finish" the edges showing so they don't just look like blunt edges hanging out there?

Replacing the door frames or base boards just isn't an option for me financially...

When I end my quarter round I do what they call a return

Its basically a 45 degree cut with another 45 attached to end the piece

The way that I've seen it done is to butt the quarter round to the door casing and cut the face at about a 45° angle, starting from the thickness of the door trim.

Mike - can you elaborate on how to make the quarter round retunr?

A return is one way to do it, but on quarter round, or base shoe, I normally gut to full legth & then just clip the end. In other words, I set the saw to 22 or 33 degree stop & just cut a little off the end of the quarter round to soften the end. Then I stain, or paint the clipped end.
