Remove foam carpet backing from floor
I am going to have some really "ratty" looking carpet from teraso(sp?)flooring. The backing was glued to the floor. All this was done sometime in the 70s. I don't want to damange the orginal flooring. I need to do it cleanly as the walls are newly painted __ don't ask. If I choose not to do it myself what kind of professional would I contact and any idea of the cost?
Uh, what is the original flooring you don't want to damage? Wood?
What color is the carpet adhesive? Is it brittle?
In general, carpet adhesive will need to be mechanically scraped off the floor with a hand scraper if it's brittle. If it's gummy still (unlikely due to the age, but ya never know for sure), you aren't going to get it off the floor too easily... most pros would knock down the lumps and skim-coat over the glue with some patch.
Some older adhesives contain asbestos (the only way to know for sure is to send a sample to a testing lab...).
