Removal of paint on unfinished wood

We are getting ready to install hardwood floors in the house. When we removed the carpet from the stairs we saw that the builders had gotten the white paint from the trim on the stairs wood. How do I get that up so I can stain the stairs to match the new floors?

Random orbit sander where possible; hand scraper in the corners, followed by hand sanding. Sorry, no magic bullet, just manuel labor.

You'll then have to apply a sealer and clear stain, assuming the rest has a natural stain on it.
