Relocating floor HVAC register, how can I patch up the hardwood floor?

In my ranch house built in 1957, All original HVAC registers are on the oak floor and all of them have tons of debris inside when I moved in.:furious: There is one that lies right in the middle of the walkway to the backyard in front of the patio door. Due to heavy foot traffic and concern of dirt build up, I am relocating it to the wall nearby. (I am having an HVAC company reducting the whole house since I don't want to breathe air from 50-year-old ducts and it's only ~$3k.)

So the question is: how do I patch up the original hole in the floor without looking horrible?

A picture would help--The standard method involves removing the boards that are in the affected area and replacing with new ones---that is called 'lacing' in new wood.--Refinishing the hall would be required.

Unless you're up for refinishing the floor, I'd suggest finding someplace inconspicuous, like inside a closet, where you could remove some of the flooring to make this repair. It probably wouldn't match perfectly, but perhaps close enough.

Sounds easy to remove a piece from a closit, but imposible to get the piece out without damage.
