Refinishing Old Hardwood Floor-Any way to just coat it with something?
My girlfriend and I live in an older apartment/house. Her father lives upstairs. It is about 100 years old. We have hardwood floors...I think they are the original.
We really do not want to pay someone to refinish it, but we want to do something with it to improve the appearance/finish. Is there any product we can buy where we would not have to sand it/strip it first? Any way to improve the appearance for relatively low labor/monetary costs? We would be doing it ourselves. Any one step or two step solutions?
I suppose you could paint the floors, which would be just slightly short of criminal in my mind, given that they are old hardwood, and deserve refinishing...... but, if you lack the time or money or both to refinish, you could use a floor enamel. In the future, someone might be very happy to discover that there is actually hardwood under that paint, and in the meantime, the paint would do a good job of preserving the hardwood for future sanding and varnishing.
