refinishing hardwood floors/ formerly varnished

The people working on my house-things I can't do myself- told me that they had an experienced hardwood floor re finisher when I told them I was getting bids.
I agreed then that they could do the floors.
They rented the sanding machine and spent several hours( charging me for the machine and the labor) and then called me and said they discovered that the floors had varnish on them and would need to be stripped first. Shouldn't they have been able to determine this to begin with?
I have had many hardwood floors refinished in the past.
Don't remember this ever being discussed.

They said they were using too many sanding discs and it was taking too long, etc.
Do they sound like novices? Should I strip them myself to save time and cost? I wonder how long and how complicated that would be? There is a large living room and 2 small bedrooms. TY.

Boot them off the job----------make a couple of calls, real floor guys own their own machines ,usually better ones than the rental shops have.

You are correct an experienced floor guy would have known what the finish was and how to deal with it.
