random orbit floor sander
Hi, I need some information on ROS for oak floor that is more than 10 years old and probably oil based polyurethane. I have used drum sander before a few times but I am now considering using the ROS.
Assuming the floor is flat enough and the finish is original, just how quickly does the ROS sand to the wood? Do I walk at the half the speed or is it slower than that?
And which grit should I start with? For a floor in fairly good condition, and using a drum sander (little smaller than really heavy professional models), I used to start with 60 grit papers because I didn't want to leave too big a mistake. However, since random orbit sander is much tamer, should I start with 40 grit paper? Thanks in advance for comparable experiences.
60, 80, 100, 120, 150
400 sq ft took me 4 hours on new wood.

Thank you for the reply. I do have to go through small closets and sand around metal railing. I don't like the thought of doing all of them with edger, and was hoping the ROS isn't too slow. Since I don't have to even out new installed floor, I think I can do 800 square feet in 2 days, with plenty of sanding paper on hand. Thank you again.
