Questions about carpet pad tools

I understand you should use a hammer stapler to fasten down carpet padding. Is this a specialty carpet tool I should rent, or do they sell them at home depot? How much should I spend if I buy one? And do I have to worry about the size of staples? The old staples I am pulling out look small.
Also should I bother to get a carpet knife? All the carpet installer I've seen just use utility knives.

Thanks

Staples size is standard? Does it matter? Like I said, the old pad staples I am pulling out look rather small.
