Putting down a cement backerboard on floor
Is it necessary to use a thinset mortar it or can you simply nail or screw it directly onto the wood subloor?

I will just reiterate what others have advised me, which is that it is neccessary.
The reason as I understand it is to avoid any voids that may be under the backerboard once installed. Voids or hollow spots are bad and may allow the floor to flex breaking your tile or grout lines.

What about those orange plastic sheets (new product) rather than cerment board for tile laying, are those good? Anyone try them?
