Pulled carpet off stairs, what's stuck on hardwood?

We just pulled the wall to wall carpet off our stairs since we knew we had hardwood underneath. It looks like whoever put the hardwood knew carpet was going right over since it's eh done on the finishing details.

either way, we have this black and dark red/brown spots all over the wood now, I can't tell if it's an adhesive or just grim from the carpet padding that was worn into the wood. My bet is the carpet was there for 30+ years, and so far with a sponge and minwax hardwood cleaner it's not coming up well. I'm told we're not supposed to use the scouring side of the sponge, so... whats my best bet? Do I need goo-off? Use the scouring side? Any help much appreciated.

I would test a small area with goo gone first.

Try Murphy's Oil soap first to clean the area, before using Goo B Gone.

Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?
