Prep for tile in a small foyer

I'm going to install tile in a small foyer, about 4' x 6' + a small closet.

This foyer is in an alcove to the foundation, and there is additional joist support underneath because of a staircase that runs perpendicular to it. The subfloor is diagonal 1x. Hardwood flooring above. There is no noticable deflection to the floor in this small area.

It seems that I'll need to eliminate the hardwood. I'm ok with this. I'll probably pull the baseboard and refinish it and undercut the door jambs & casing... I've not yet chosen a tile, but probably some moderately priced 12" squares.

From what I've read, I'll need some additional ply or OSB over the subfloor.

I'd like recommendations for thickness/material to lay under the backer board for this small of an area and any other tips you can offer. Thanks!

After the hardwood is removed you will need 1/2 inch b-c plywood --at a minimum--then 1/4 inch durrock set in mud---Stay away from osb--you are trying to add stiffness --osb does not do that as well as plywood.
