Plywood over subfloor before laminate

Need to avoid lips at transitions to kitchen, foyer and bathrooms, so I'm laying down 1/2 plywood before we put down laminate. Does it matter what type/grade of plywood we use? Trying to keep cost down on the filler material.

Not a big concern---OSB would work for the filler--

I would not use CDX. Full of voids in the core.

Can I use 1.5" screws to attach this 1/2" to the 3/4 tongue and groove?

Or do I need to screw the 1/2" into the joists?

Underlayment does not get screwed to the joist.
That's going to be a heck of a lot screws, it needs to be attached every 4" on the edges and 6 to 8" in the field.
A whole lot faster to used ring shanked #8 nails in a nail gun.

Yeah that's a good idea. I am using 2.5" screws on the t&g to eliminate squeaks so I was in the screw mindset. Nailing will be cheaper/faster.
May as well buy the gun to complement my 18 and 16 gauge guns.
