Pergo/Laminate Flooring & Carpet

I have Pergo/Laminate wood flooring on the stairs leading to the 2nd floor & in the master bedroom. Is it possible to leave the floor in place and just have the stairs & bedroom carpeted over the flooring?

Also, anyone have good/bad comments about Standard Pacific builders?

You could probably leave the floor in place and carpet right over it. They'll just attach the tack strips right through it. My only concern is that the laminate flooring is a floating floor system, and driving fasteners through it could potentially cause squeaks when walking on it.

Lam expands and contracts. the carpet will not stay stretched.
