Hello every one I am new here My question is I would like to install a pergo floor that already has the padding installed on the underside i guess this is considered a floating floor there is a pine hardwood floor down already that is in really bad shape . should the new floor be installed in the same direction as the old one or can i change the direction if i desire .

You should alway change directions when putting wood or laminate over and existing floor.

As long as the surface is flat and stable you can put your flooring down in whichever direction is aesthetically pleasing. The flooring media is not more directionally stable one way than another aside from the seams. If your floor is so uneven that the seams are compromised one way and not the other you should level your subfloor first in either case. Laminate flooring is not adding any strength to your subfloor by installing it as it is not a suitable material to derive strength and not mechanically fastened. It is simply a veneer and can be put down however you like.

Why not have the old floor refinished? Seems to me that installing a plastic laminate over real wood is going in the wrong direction.
