Patches of floor finish will not come off

We used 20 and 36 on our hardwood floors. There are STILL patches of finish that remain. I've been trying an old mouse hand sander and can get some of it up. (Which works beautifully as an edger by the way!) But thse leftover patches are really stubburn. Most of it is along the edges of the boards but some are entire strips. In the dining room we thought we had most all of it but then went from 36 to 80 and we're still seeing shiny spots and those patches look even worse now that we've begun to smooth it all out. If anyone had told me sanding was going to take almost 3 days I would have not have started this project!

A mouse is good for little more then just a finish sander.
What other sanders have you been using to do this?
You should have rented an edger and a drum sander for this job.

I gave up long ago trying to sand and finish my own floors.
A pro refinisher can do it faster and it will come out better.

Yes, we are using a drum sander everywhere and initially used an edger for the first pass at 20. I resorted to the mouse (using the 20 and 36 paper from the drum sander) because it gave me better control to try to get at these little patches that the drum sander was not removing. (2-3 passes at 24)

(Yes, clearly a pro could do it better, but it's a little late for that now.)

Use a randum orbital sander not a mouse.

What you are using is just not aggresive enough. an edger is a great machine if used properly. By the way, that sanding sequence of 36 to 80 grit is going to cause your finish to wear off pretty quick. 99.5 percent of the floors we sand, we start with 40 or 50 grit. It is touch to get out scratches from a 20 grit. It is not too late to call a pro.
