A particle board sandwich??

Ok guys, I'm demolishing an old bedroom that at least part of it will become a master bathroom. The problem is the original subfloor is 5/8" plywood with 5/8ths" particle board over the top. There was a carpet covering before I got to it... hehe.

I'm wondering if I can't get away with laying cement board over the top of the P board as the new subfloor instead of having to tear the p board out. The edges of the p board go under the sheet rock wall and the job would be a *****! Any thoughts are highly appreciated. Thanks, Al

Well......you know what they say.... "Life's a *****, and then you die.

Start ripping. The subfloor is the first layer on the joists. So the particle board is an underlayment and should have been installed after the walls were erected.

As you may know, PB is way too unstable for flooring, it'll also absorb much of the moisture from the thin set you'll use to install the cement board. Not good.

You'll probably want to replace the PB with 5/8" underlayment grade plywood, not the cheap sheathing stuff. Let us know your plans including brands of cement board, thin set and type of tiles etc.

Jaz
