Particle Board Floor

Hey Guys,my wife wants to tile our bathroom floor.Pulled up vinyl flooring and there is particle board flooring over joists, that's it.Don't want to replace floor. Can we paint waterproof membrane over it,then thinset and then put down backerboard? If this is ok can you suggest a good membrane product?

Thanks

I'm no expert but my house was built in 1977 and there is (and was) particle board throughout. I've renovated about 50% of my house and ALWAYS remove the particle board. It is a terrible material that readily absorbs water and not to mention, has formaldehyde in it (use mask if removing). I would recommend taking it out and replacing with plywood.

Have you never read the instructions on any of those products? What do they say about use with particleboard?:)

I was under the impression we could put the thinset down at least to cover any low spots and then add the backerboard.

Read the instructions on the thinset package. The same information is on every bag of thinset I have ever seen.

Ok,I'm following you now.Thinset not for particle board.Has to be pulled up and replaced with plywood. Thanks!

Particleboard will not survive the moisture of a thinset application or a liquid waterproofing application. Particalboard is not to be used anywhere in a tile installation.

The 1970s brought a lot of new build products and practices to the market--

Roof trusses---floor trusses--drywall screws and glue---foam board--and particle board among others--

Not all of them worked well---particle board was one of the failures-----
