Partially removing carpet?

We have two bedrooms with carpet running through the bedroom area into the bathrooms. I want to tile the floors in the bathrooms, but leave the carpet in the bedroom. Is it possible to cut the carpet at the entrance to the bathroom and tack it back down? Then replace the bathroom carpet with tile.

We are also thinking about replacing the carpet, but that may be some time after the tile. I'm sure it would be easier to do all at once but not sure if the $$$ will allow.
