Painters caulk for stair gaps?

I am in the process of refinishing my mothers wood stairs. Before I apply the stain, I was wondering if there was anything you guys would suggest to make her life easier when she is cleaning them. I noticed that there is some settling (I suppose) between the stairs leaving small gaps for dirt and pet hair to get trapped. It was quite a job getting all that stuff out! I believe it was the tutorial on this website that said I could fill those spaces with painters caulk. I was wondering if you could just confirm that painters caulk was the way to go. Im a little concerned about how thats going to look with stain over it too.

Thanks so much

Painters caulk for stair gaps?

Are talking about the backs of the treads where they meet the risers? If so, my suggestion would be to stain and finish the steps first, and then to apply a caulk that matches the stairs after the finish is dried. The recommendation for painters caulk must mean for against painted surfaces. So if the skirts are white, then white caulk on the sides will work.
