I you are talking about Minwax polyshades, I do not recommend it. My experience is that it puddle in nicks, crevices and corners and looks terrible. Since it drys slowly there is no real way to prevent the darker puddles.
I prefer to not use the one step process for the reasons just mentioned. I always use the two step method. It takes more time but you have better control because you can apply as much or as little stain to achieve the desired shade. I always believe it's better to take a little longer and get great results than to rush and take a shortcut.
This won't be something that you will have to do again for a long time, so make it look good and have some patience.
