Putty knife on your hands and knees? blisters? back ache? headache?? Heat? Propane torch? Thankfully i didnt have this issue, mine was thirty years old and came up with a bare hand. You gotta get down and work! Be careful not to grind or sand anything. Make no dust, keep it damp. Tell us more concerning the adhesive, the substrate and your floor covering plans.
