Old, sticky carpet pad on oak floors

What is the best way to get old, sticky carpet pad off my oak hardwood floors? I've been on my hands and knees with a hand scraper because I don't want to use a liquid and make the wood swell.

Liquid removers may not swell the wood but can effect how the stain and sealer react with the floor.
Get off all you can and sand off the rest.
