Office chair on hardwood floor

Just bought a 1955 house to use mostly as an office. There are hardwood floors throughout. This is the first time I've had an office with a hardwood floor so I'm wondering what, if anything, I need to do to prevent damage or wear to it from my rolling chairs.

The planks are 2 1/4-inch and don't creak. I'm not sure of the type of wood but I presume it's oak.

5' X 9' area rugs?

Chair pad.

Googling around, which I should have done in the first place, I found they sell soft polyurethane casters and rubber caster replacements for office chairs for just this thing. I don't care for floor mats but that's the other option. There are floor mats made specifically for hardwood floors.

No matter how soft the rollers, they can still grind in dirt. Padding of any sort is the best protection IMHO.

That's a good point.

I have a nice looking area rug with pad under my chair. It certainly does not look like an industrial office chair pad.
