Oak hardwood Flooring

I am re-staining my kitchen and dining rooom. My friend applied the oil wood stain with foam brushes. I completed my sections with a white china bristle paintbrush and used a clean cloth to remove any excess stain. The result of each of us using different techniques is that the stain is uneven. Also some of the areas in which the foam brush was used is still sticky (too much stain?). Are there any tricks for evening out the color before applying a second coat of stain?

This won't answer your question but might be useful for future reference. There is a prestain sealer that is applied prior to staining wood that results in a more even appearance. You can find it in the same aisle of your home center where the stains are kept. Unfortunately since you already applied stain it is too late to use it on this project.
