Need help deciding which flooring to use over carpet

I'd like to set up a kitchen space in a basement, but I'm not sure which flooring material to use. Because of the landlord's wishes, I cannot remove the carpet where I'd like to set the floor. I just want something that repels water and is an easy clean-up for anything that falls onto it.

Are there any sheet-like rolls of floor material such as laminate or similar? Should I just use one of those mats that an office desk space uses? Thanks for reading.

I don't know of anything waterproof that you can use over carpet.

The only thing I can think of is the roll of adhesive-backed plastic that you see on the carpets of homes that are being sold. They make a path with it going from room to room. You could overlap it and it should keep fluids and dirt off the carpet.

But I can't imagine that it would look very nice or last very long.

I would advise against the plastic. It is not made for prolonged use. I had alot of trouble removing it after 2 months of being down. It left some adhesive behind that took forever to get up. It was not visible until after the people moved in and the traffic areas started showing dirt.

Instead of plastic with adhesive, what material would you recommend to use? So far all I've been given is advice on what not to get.

Honestly, you're not going to get a very satisfactory result out of anything you put over carpet.

However, I'd suggest you think seriously about getting some "on clearance" laminate flooring. It's designed to be a floating floor, so it just might work. Put it together, find something (even if you have to glue it to the laminate) to use as a transition, and give it a whirl. You might be surprised. And if it's cheap enough (I've bought some as cheap at 41 cents per square foot on clearance) you're not out much anyway.


On the other hand, if your carpet is thick, laminate flooring probably won't work at all.

There arn't many things available to use over carpet.

Someone out there sells a heavy vinyl that is pre cut to different sizes and has a rubber backing on it. I know it's used in office areas that are carpeted. It's put down for heavy traffic areas.
Now the next obvious question is where to buy it. I don't know short of talking to the office supply folks in your area.

The only other thing I can think of that might work is some heavy rubber matting. You can order it in your choice of several colors. MSC and Uline carry it.

I would like to know if the carpet is glue down without pad. If it does not have pad there are some irregular fixes that are not really recomended, but they will probably work. No garrentees.

are you serious .There is nothing .If the landlord doesnt want to upgrade to your liking then move to a house that you like.

How large of an area? Is it square? You could just buy some sheets of thin plywood, lay that on the carpet, then put sheet vinyl flooring on it and be done. Easy to clean and remove when you leave.
You could even use peel and stick cheapie 12" squares of flooring to stick to the 4'x8' sheets..
