Need help cleaning up a slab for laminat flooring

I am remodeling a studio apartment that is built over two slabs. First slab is level and smooth, second slab (1/3 of the house) is lumpy and far out of level. I need to smooth the second slab to the point that I can put laminate flooring down without conforming to the ups and downs of the floor. I would like to use self leveling compound but I'm afraid that at the low end it will be too deep to be cost efficient. Is there a product that smooth the bad areas that is not self leveling compound? I am afraid that self leveling compound will it just all run to the low end of the floor? What product/solutions would you all recommend?

Thanks,
Dave
