need flooring recommendations for an 1890s 4-sqaure brick house

Our 1890's 4-square brick house needs a new kitchen floor. It's the main entryway into the house with lots of dirt, manure, dog tracks, etc. going through the area. The base floor appears to be oak boards. The flooring on top of that is black and looks similar to an outdoor tennis court floor-almost like very smooth asphalt. The floor also has a drop of about 5% on the west side. We plan on trying to jack up the floor to help even it. The basement ceiling has 4 floor heaters for the kitchen (hot water heat).

What kinds of flooring should we: (A) stay completely away from and (B) most probably have the most success in using with this old house? We'd like to keep the materials cost under $1,000 for the 14x14 room.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
