Nailed Solid Bamboo floor over OSB, can I do this?

Hello!

I was reading various web sites regarding installing the solid bamboo floor. One page suggested that you can only install (nail down) over a solid plywood floor. The site implied that the floor will not hold a nail and floor will start squeaking. However, the instructions with the flooring state you can install over plywood or OSB. This same web site also suggested using two layers of 15# felt and not a single layer.

I am not wanting to glue this floor down.

Thanks for any help!

You can nail it down to OSB wich is oriented strand board . Ply wood is veneer going different directions and is good also , You may be confused about the plywood that you can't nail too and that is that fiber board . Or ?? I can't remember what it's called but it looks like super fine saw dust , It;s not ply wood it is underlayment for vynil , Don't be confused , I did that once also , One layer of light wieght roofing felt is the best , If you use the 30lb it will show through the hardwood because it will be so thick at the lapping area that the hardwood will be uneven , Trust me I did it The best paper is rosen paper for hardwood , NOT that cheap reddish stuff , But the real hardwood vapor barrier paper . tacomahardwoodfloors.com

You are thinking of particle board.

Tacomahardwood, what is the brand name of that rosin paper? I have been suggesting this: http://www.fortifiber.com/aquabar_b.html because the red rosin paper bleeds and as stated, is not a vapor barrier for over crawl space or laundry rooms.

Be safe, Gary (also in Tacoma)!

I just installed bamboo floor by using staples in a few rooms and the hallway, I first fixed the squeaking made by the subfloor then put one layer of Aquabar B as the underlayment, don't think an additional layer is necessary. I am very satisfied with the result.

How did you first fix the squeaking?

I had my 220lbs brother walked around the subfloor so I could locate the squeaks. I replaced the nails in that area with 3" screws ... hardest part was to pull out the sinked nails

I'd have just added the screws an inch or so away from the nails, and if they rose, hammer 'em back down!

I thought of doing that but not sure if that'd work so I decide to first eliminate the problem then secure the subfloor. If the squeaking problem can be solved by putting new screws an inch away then next time I'll do it this way. Thanks DM for the tips
