My house stinks

I bought my house about two years ago. It's an older house, built around the 50's-60's. When I moved in I noticed it had a funky smell, like an "old house" type of smell. I hoped that by moving in and getting the AC going and putting a dehumidifier in the basement it would alleviate the odor.

Nope. It's better, but the smell is still there.

The reason I put this in the flooring section is I think most of the smell is trapped in the carpet and padding. The house sat empty for a couple of years before I bought it, and I think the carpeting got musty.

I can't afford new flooring yet, so should I pay to have the carpet cleaned? Or would that make the problem worse? I've heard steam cleaning can eventually make any mold or mildew issues worse.

Carpet cleaning doesn't cost that much. Try that first. Have the carpet cleaning company also treat the carpets with a mildewcide/moldicide when they clean.
