moving carpet through narrow areas

What is the preferred way to move large amounts of carpet? I have to carpet a basement with a large amount of carpet (1800 square feet) and no idea how to get the carpet down there. It's not at all a direct shot from outside down the stairs, so I assume this much carpet can't be bent around corners?

I can cut it into smaller pieces, but I don't want to do this too much... and still with smaller pieces I don't think this would be that much easier to navigate.

How do people move large amounts of carpet around hallways and such? Should I unroll and feed it like a train? What considerations are there regarding keeping the carpet and walls in good shape?

I know it's no help, but we have always made our cuts and then carried it in.

after you made the cuts, did you roll it back up? could you roll it back up, or was it easier to kinda drag it around?

You just roll up the cuts and carry it in. It takes experience. I've had people try to help me that had never carried carpet before and they could not handle it.

So what is the technique to do this properly? What do you do if the carpet is 15' width and the halls are narrow?

You put it on your shoulder and carry it. I'm not trying to sound like a smarta**, but that's just the way we do it. Many times it isn't easy but when you do it every day, you just learn how. And there is a technique to carry it. I have carried many a roll of carpet that weighed 400 lbs by myself. There really isn't any way to just explain it, sorry.

Fifteen foot wide carpet is a problem for sure. The job can be measured accurately then drops cut outside. The drops/cuts can then be loosely rolled so that they (the rolls) can be folded in half. This will reduce the pieces to (under) eight foot lengths that are easier to get around corners and through hallways and down stairs. The weight is the big thing.
