Mixing hardwoods in diningroom and hallway...

We would like to put hardwood in our main hallway and 2 smaller adjoining hallways. Simple enough....right?
The problem were facing: One of the smaller hallways joins a dining room (currently used as a weight room) which already has hardwood flooring. The main hallway joins the livingroom (carpeted) and also the kitchen (ceramic tile).

In a perfect world, we would just replace the current hardwood and ceramic tile with wood. But we can't afford that.

How would it look to use a wood similar in color tones, but obviously different. The current wood is long narrow planks. We thought about using wider, more distressed planks in the hallway.

Your thoughts?

Try not to make it look like you were trying to match unless you can get it perfect.
Is this unfinished wood?

think of the work "contrast"
if it is a light wood, then find something darkerto bring out any dark grain in the current wood.

is it an oak?

The wood was here when we purchased the house. I think it's oak with a medium finish. Some golden undertones. We were leaning towards a contrasting color, I just wanted to hear someone else's opinion. I would love to see some pictures to help visualize. We really love the more rustic . distressed appearance.
