Question

Matching Tile Floor Height

I am getting ready to lay a tile floor in our bathroom that we recently gutted. The subfloor is 2x6s. Everything I have read says you need atleast a 1/2" (3/8" bare minimum) plywood between the backer board, thin set, and subfloor. The problem is that the hardwood floors in the hallway are only 3/4" thick and I would like them to meet up flush so people are not having to deal with a tripping hazard. Any ideas? Also should I be worried about using 1/4" backer board and 1/4" tiles? I was concerned that the tiles might break easily. This is my first time working with tile, and I want to make sure it gets done right. Thanks everyone for your time. I really appreciate any help that can be given!
